Lecture Notes CEM352 SS 2026

(General Chemistry Review: View these YouTube Videos)

NOTE: None of these videos features Prof. Kevin Walker or MSU Chemistry T.A.s. These are select videos from YouTubers that provide a great review of what was learned in General Chemistry, or the videos are instructional. However, for CEM 351, it is assumed that you have taken General Chemistry. These video packs offer different viewpoints and delivery styles for overlapping material.

Video Pack 1 (3 Parts)

1)    General Chemistry Review for Organic Chemistry Part 1 - YouTube

2)    General Chemistry Review for Organic Chemistry Part 2 - YouTube

3)    General Chemistry Review for Organic Chemistry Part 3 - YouTube

Video Pack 2 (1 Part: recommended to watch in 20 min segments, so the over 1 hr of material is not overwhelming)

1)    General Chemistry Review for Organic Chemistry - YouTube

Video Pack 3

1)    Functional Groups (Identifying them)

Claisen Condensations via Ester Enolates

Dieckmann Condensation (Cyclized Claisen Condensation)

Reactions of β-Dicarbonyl Compounds – Notice the increased acidity of the α-carbon hydrogens of a dicarbonyl compound vs the α-carbon hydrogens of a monocarbonyl. One mistake at 4:25. The product should be a carboxylate, not a carboxylic acid. If you heat the carboxylate without adding more base, you will decarboxylate.

Use of a Thiazolium Salt to Condense Two Aldehydes and Form an α-Hydroxyketone. Can you find the errors in the video?
