Chemistry Teacher Web Resources

Chemistry Skills Practice Problems

This Widener University site provides students the opportunity to practice many of the skills required for high school & introductory college chemistry classes. Students select a topic, click on a problem, type in their answer and get immediate feedback; after three wrong attempts the correct answer is displayed. The student can keep clicking to access different versions of the same type of problem. A “scoreboard” is displayed so a teacher can look at a student’s computer screen and see, at a glance, how they are doing. It is organized by chapters and very easy to search—specifically from “Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity” by Kotz and Treichel. Topics range from simple significant figure counting, density-mass-volume calculations, temperature conversions to more challenging kinetics, equilibrium and redox problems. Bill Struck from Williamston High School has found it very useful for both in class as well as independent practice.

PhET Interactive Science Simulations

This site has free interactive simulations of a variety of topics in physics and chemistry. This is a must see site particularly if you have an LCD projector or SmartBoard. The chemistry sims of events that happen at the atomic level are particularly helpful.

MASER Science Internet Resources (Saginaw Valley State University)

The Internet sites found listed in the site are the result of work completed by teachers who attended the Generation II: MASER project during one week Summer Workshops.  Workshop participants researched science Internet sites using a set of developed evaluation criteria.  A set of Internet learning activities were found which correlated directly with the Michigan Science Content Statements and Expectations. The result is that teachers and students will be able to use the provided Internet resources as a learning tool to supplement currently available materials.

Opportunities for Students

These resources were compiled by Will Paddock at East Lansing High School.

Frontiers in Science Workshops

The Frontiers in Science Weekend Workshop Series provides opportunities for teachers with secondary science credentials to meet with top researchers on cutting-edge scientific developments. Michigan State University faculty present the research over a five-hour period: two hours Friday evening and three hours Saturday morning on the MSU campus. Registration is required.
