The awards will be in a display case on the first floor in Chemistry Building.

LOCAL NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK CELEBRATION:

* CHEMISTRY DAY AT IMPRESSION 5 MUSEUM

The MSU Local Section of the American Chemical Society will once again celebrate National Chemistry Week with our 15th annual “Chemistry Day” event held from 11 am – 3:30 pm on Saturday, October 20, 2001 at Impression 5 Science Center (200 Museum Drive, Lansing, MI). The theme this year is “Celebrating Chemistry & Art”.  MSU faculty, staff, and students, local area schools and businesses will have chemistry-related hands-on experiments, art activities, and chemical demonstrations that are both entertaining and educational!  Cool chemistry items (including chemistry tee shirts, element pins, and stuffed moles) will be raffled off each hour.  Free museum admission thanks to MBI International!  Please come and join us for the fun!  Contact Kathy Severin (severin@cem.msu.edu), local section coordinator for National Chemistry Week 2001, for more information.

** PUBLIC LECTURE

During NCW, the local section will also host a public lecture: given by Dr. Karen Trentelman, Associate Research Scientist in the Conservation Laboratory at the Detroit Institute of Arts.  The talk will be presented on Thursday, November 8, 2001 at 7:30 pm. at the Kresge Art Museum on the MSU campus.  A reception will be held at the museum prior to the lecture beginning at 6:30 pm.

Preserving the Past: Art and Science at the Detroit Institute of Arts

The vast collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) includes paintings, photographs, drawings, textiles, decorative arts and sculpture.  The staff of the DIA’s Conservation Laboratory work to ensure the preservation of the museum’s collections for future generations.  Works of art can be made of almost any material imaginable, but generally fall into one of five conservation disciplines: paintings, objects, works of art on paper, textiles, and frames.  Working within all these disciplines, conservation scientists analyze and study the materials and methods used to create artistic and historic works.  Techniques typically employed include X-radiography, polarizing and UV fluorescence microscopy, X-ray fluorescence and diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Raman microscopy.  In collaboration with conservators and curators, the scientific analyses are used to help resolve questions of condition, technique and authenticity; support the acquisition of works of art; determine appropriate storage or display materials; and guide the selection of conservation treatments.  A number of case histories will be presented to illustrate the application of traditional and modern analytical methods to the study of works of art, archaeological artifacts and ethnographic objects.

Dr. Karen Trentelman is an Associate Research Scientist in the Conservation Laboratory at the Detroit Institute of Arts.  She received a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from Cornell University and did postdoctoral work at Northwestern University.  Prior to joining the DIA in 1995, she served as a scientific consultant to the Art Institute of Chicago and was an assistant professor in the Art Conservation Department at the State University College at Buffalo.

*** A POSTER CONTEST

is being conducted for grades K-12 that has the theme “Celebrating Chemistry – Then and Now” in recognition of the 125th anniversary of the American Chemical Society.  Prizes will be awarded in three categories: elementary, middle, and high school.  More details on this contest are available on the NCW website http://chemistry.org/ncw.  Contact Kathy Severin for information on entry submission.

DOC GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS 2001-2002

The members of ACS local section congratulate Bill Gallagher for being one of 15 graduate students nationwide to receive an ACS Division of Organic Chemistry graduate fellowship. Bill's fellowship is sponsored by Pfizer. http://www.chem.unt.edu/acs/fall01newsletter.htm

ACS WOMEN IN CHEMISTRY

ACS Women in Chemistry (ACSWIC), the MSU local section WCC, received the first ever Best Overall Local Section Women Chemists Committee award at the ChemLuminary Awards ceremony at the ACS meeting in Chicago!  We celebrated the award in September with an ice cream social for the whole department.

In September we chatted with Prof. Deanne Snavely from the Department of Chemistry and Photochemical Sciences Bowling Green State University as part of our Meet the Speaker program.  We have two activities planned for October.  First, in an effort to maintain ties with the our alumnae and make contacts in the chemical industry, we will host a round-table lunch with former MSU graduate students Ms. Shawn Mehrens of Pfizer; Dr. Micah Stowe of Clorox; and Dr. Wendy Flory of Dow Chemical on October 17th at 12 pm in 329 Chemistry.  These women will share their experiences of the job hunting process and the transition from graduate school to industry.  Our second activity is presenting outreach activities at Chemistry Day at Impression 5 on Saturday, October 20th.

Heather Bullen is the 2001-2 WCC chairman.  Other members of the steering committee are Erin Paske, Maggie Witek, Shannon Haymond, and Kathy Severin.  To find out more about ACSWIC, visit our website at http://www.cem.msu.edu/~acswic/acswic.html.

LOCAL SECTION TRAVEL GRANTS

SCIENCE SPOTLIGHTsm  Web Service Connects Scientists to High Interest Research

A new web service from Chemical Abstracts Service reveals the most highly cited and requested chemistry-related research publications as reflected by the citations included in the CAS databases and the full-text documents requested by scientists through the ChemPortâ Connection. CAS Science Spotlight will provide not only lists of highly cited and requested documents but also the bibliographic and abstract information along with the full text, where available, all free of charge.

CAS Science Spotlight lists the documents most cited, for the last two publication years, in the patents, conference proceedings, Web preprints or one of the 8000 journals covered by CAS, producer of the world's largest collection of scientific information. Also identified are the scientific papers and chemistry-related patents for which researchers have most frequently requested the full text via the CAS ChemPort Connection, available through STNâ, SciFinderâ and SciFinder Scholar.  In its initial release Spotlight lists the “Most Requested” documents for a five- week period during the most recent quarter.   Future updates will be offered quarterly.

The following publishers, authors and distributors have provided free full-text documents in Science Spotlight: ACS Publications; Academic Press/IDEAL; American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB); MicroPatent; National Research Council of Canada; Oxford University Press;  The National Academy of Sciences of the U. S.; Dr. Fredrick Sanger, Cambridge, England; and Dr. Harry Towbin, Basel, Switzerland.

CAS Science Spotlight can be found on the web at http://www.cas.org/spotlight/or through a link from the CAS home page.
