Congratulations
to Annis
Hapkiewicz Recipient
of the 2001
Central Region Award in High School Chemistry Teaching Ms. Annis Hapkiewicz, a teacher at
Okemos High School, and the 1999-2000 Outstanding High School Chemistry
Teacher of the Year in the MSU Local Section, has received the 2001 Central
Region Award in High School Chemistry Teaching. Annis has worked in the Okemos Public
School system since 1970. Her
approach in the classroom is to encourage her students to examine and
challenge their explanations of the physical world. This begins the process of constructing a framework of
understanding based on the scientific process. She also encourages both the human element and historical
perspective of a scientific achievement, as well as any social and cultural
aspects that may have played a role in the nature of the discovery. This ability to stimulate student interest
as affected the growth and success of the Okemos High School AP Chemistry
program. Her students are among the
best in Michigan in receiving the superior “5” score on the exam. She has led a successful drive to
encourage young women to move into the AP program, as well. She
is a prolific contributor to educational journals, with several dozen
articles published. She continues her
professional growth through a series of annual workshops and courses, and she
is an active member of several Science and Academic associations. In 2000, she received a travel award from
the MSU Local Section to attend the 16th Biennial Conference on
Chemical Education in Ann Arbor, MI.

2001 CENTRAL REGION AWARD
IN HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY TEACHING (continued
from p.1)
There she co-chaired, and presented at, a symposium entitled “Chemical Demonstrations in a Variety of Classroom Settings”.
With all that, she still has found time to serve a coach of the Chemistry Olympiad and Quiz Bowl teams from Okemos High, serve as an advisor for the National Honor Society, and work with students on research projects that have been submitted to national science contests. She is extremely proud of the fact that many of her students have achieved national recognition for their efforts.
As a recipient of the 2001 Central Region Award in High School Chemistry Teaching, Annis is now nominated for the James Bryan Conant Award in High School Chemistry Teaching.
The Michigan State University Section of the American Chemical Society has established an award for the outstanding graduating student in chemical sciences at each of the colleges within the section's borders. The faculty at each college selected the award recipient from their school. The 2000-2001 outstanding graduating students in chemistry are:
Albion College – Sarah Burpee
Jackson Community College – Michael Baldwin
Kellogg Community College – Christopher Niblock
Michigan State University – Amy McAdam and Jeffrey N. Dzingle
Spring Arbor College – Melonnie Furgason
Amy and Jeffrey received their award (also known as the Kedzie Award) at a reception in the MSU Chemistry Department. Dr. Robin Hood presented Sarah Burpee with her award during a retirement symposium for Dr. Robert Armstrong at Albion College. Prof. Paul Mantica distributed the award to Melonnie Furgason during Honor’s Chapel at Spring Arbor College and to Michael Baldwin during class at JCC. Christopher Niblock received his award from the KCC department chair at their annual awards banquet.
The recipients of the 1999-2000 ACS awards for outstanding performance in undergraduate chemistry at Michigan State University are:
Freshman Chemistry – Daniel C. Peltier
Honors Freshman Chemistry – Andrew Carl Goetz
Organic Chemistry – Michael J. Davis
Physical/Analytical Chemistry – Bryan P. Hogle
Advanced Chemistry – Eric L. Dane
These awards were presented at a reception in the Department of Chemistry at MSU on Friday, April 27th.
We are happy to announce that the MSU Local Section has been nominated for four (4!) ChemLuminary Awards:
· Best Overall Local Section Women Chemists Committee-ACS Women in Chemistry,
· Activity or Program in a Local Section that Best Addresses the ACS Strategic Thrusts-ACS Women in Chemistry,
· Most Innovative New Activity or Program in a Local Section-awarding patches to Girl Scout participants at Chemistry day at the Mall
· Outstanding Performance by a Local Section Medium Size Category.
Kathy Severin, MSU Local Section
Councilor, will represent the local section at the awards ceremony held during

The ACS MSU Local Section will once again usher in National Chemistry Week (NCW) with our 15th annual “Chemistry
Day in the Lansing Mall” from 11 am – 3 pm on Saturday, October 20, 2001.
During NCW, the local section will also host a public lecture: “Preserving the Past: Art and Science at the Detroit Institute of Arts” given by Dr. Karen Trentelman, Associate Research Scientist in the Conservation Laboratory at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The talk will be presented on Thursday, November 8, 2001 at 7:30 p.m. at the Kresge Art Museum on the MSU campus. A reception will be held outside the auditorium prior to the lecture.
A poster contest is being conducted for grades K-12 that has the theme “Celebrating Chemistry – Then and Now” in recognition of the 125th anniversary of the American Chemical Society. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: elementary, middle, and high school. More details on this contest will be available on the NCW website http://www.acs.org/ncw.
Starting in 2002, National Chemistry Week will be moved to the fourth week of October! The change was made because many local sections (ours included) have been unable to hold events in shopping malls (popular NCW activity sites) after November 1st. It was also found that some sections were having problems getting publicity for their events because the early November dates coincided with elections.
