Dr. Keith InGOld

2000 Max T. Rogers Lecturer

            Dr. Keith Ingold, National Research Council of Canada, was born in Leeds, England (1929).  He received his B.S. Honors in Chemistry at the University of London (1949) and Ph.D. in Chemistry at Oxford University (1951).  In 1951, at the age of 22, he moved to Canada to do postdoctoral research in Ottawa at the National Research Council and followed this with a two-year stint as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia.

            In 1955, he returned to work for the National Research Council in the Division of Chemistry and the Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences as Research Officer.  He became Head of the Free Radical Chemistry Section and Associate Director in the Division of Chemistry.  In 1990 he was named the Institute’s Distinguished Research Scientist.  He has also been an Adjunct Professor and Visiting Scientist at twenty universities and corporations around the world.

            Dr. Ingold has received numerous honors and awards including the Canada Gold Metal for Science and Engineering from NSERC (1998) and ACS awards: Petroleum Chemistry Award (1968), Linus Pauling Award (1988), Arthur C. Cope Award (1992), and the James Flack Norris Award for Physical Organic Chemistry (1993).  He was named a Humbolt Research Fellow (1989) and is a fellow of the Royal Society of London, the Royal Society of Canada, the Chemical Institute of Canada, and the Unversity College of London.

            Dr. Ingold has published over 460 research papers in the open scientific literature and is the author of two books: “Free-Radical Substitution Reactions” and “Nitrogen-Centered Radicals, Aminoxyl and Related Radicals.”

Local National Chemistry Week celebration

In the December 20, 1999 edition of Chemical and Engineering News, the MSU Local Section’s annual “Chemistry Day at the Lansing Mall” was the first activity featured in an article describing local section activities during National Chemistry Week 1999.  A picture of Daniel Hewitt, an MSU undergraduate student who participated in the mall demonstrations, is prominently displayed on page 41 of this edition.  Kathy Severin served as coordinator for National Chemistry Week 1999 activities at the Local Section level.  Sheldon Knoespel, who has been an integral part of the mall show since its inception 13 years ago, provided instruction for all the MSU undergraduate students (including Daniel Hewitt) who participated in the show.  Sheldon and Kathy should be congratulated for the effort they have put forth in organizing this effective outreach activity.

The ACS MSU Local Section will once again usher in National Chemistry Week with our 14th annual  “Chemistry Day in the Lansing Mall” from 11 am – 3 pm on Saturday, October 21, 2000.  We invite area schools, MSU science departments, and industrial organizations to begin thinking now about their participation in this fun-filled and educational event.  Kathy Severin (severin@cem.msu.edu) will serve as the Local Section Coordinator for National Chemistry Week 2000.  The theme for NCW 2000 will be Kitchen Chemistry.

LOCAL SECTION TRAVEL GRANTS

The MSU Local Section has limited funds available to provide travel support to chemical research/educational conferences.  Travel grants up to $250.00 may be awarded to individuals who are members of the MSU Local Section or the local K-12 science education community and have a paper accepted at a conference sanctioned by the American Chemical Society.  An application form for travel support is available at http://www.cem.msu.edu/~msuacs/tgrants.html.  Applications will be reviewed by MSU Local Section board members in May and December each year.  Please contact Paul Mantica, 517-333-6456 or email mantica@msu.edu for more information.

FEES FOR ACS NATIONAL MEETINGS

CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD

On Tuesday, March 7, 2000, 68 high school chemistry students from Charlotte, East Lansing, Eaton Rapids, Hastings, Holt, Lansing Everett, Lansing Eastern, Okemos, and Stockbridge High Schools participated in the local section Chemistry Olympiad qualifying examination held in the MSU Chemistry Building.  The students took a written multiple choice examination and the top thirty-six finishers subsequently worked two practical problems in the lab.  The top eight students will qualify to write the United States National Chemistry Olympiad (UNSCO) test which, will be held on April 14, 2000 at MSU.  These testing events were coordinated by Mr. Sheldon Knoespel.

8:00 am – 4:30 pm

The tenth annual Great Lakes College Chemistry Conference Undergraduate Research Program will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2000, in the Chemistry Building at Michigan State University.  The GLCCC Undergraduate Research Program provides a forum for undergraduate students to present their research projects to their peers and to the chemistry community.  We invite all undergraduates interested to participate, either through presentation of a research poster or as an attendee.  Faculty members, graduate students, and industrial chemists are encouraged to register as attendees.

A multi-faceted program is planned:

q       Poster Sessions:  traditional undergraduate student research poster sessions;

q       Workshops & Tours:  laser spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, molecular modeling, protein structure and synthesis, superconducting cyclotron, chemical analysis, and more;

q       Scientific Talks & Lectures:  given by GLCCC alums and members of the scientific community;

q       Networking:  mix and mingle throughout the day with students and faculty from Michigan and surrounding states.

The deadline for research abstract submission was March 15, however, advance registration is still available by mail or through the web site for the $10.00 fee.  On-site registration is $15.00.  Registration includes the above program, the Conference Proceedings, and lunch.  Participants should plan to arrive between 8:00 and 9:00 am.  For maps of MSU and the Lansing area go to http://www.msu.edu/dig/msumap/

Questions should be directed to Evelyn Jackson, 2000 GLCCC Coordinator at 517-355-9715 ext. 341 or via e-mail: ejackson@cem.msu.edu.
