Chemistry 834
Fall 2010
Analytical Chemistry
Labview 7.0 Exercise
On this page, you will find instructions for installing Labview, and for downloading a copy of the Labview exercises that are to be completed as part of the Electronics module of CEM 834.
Getting
Started:
1.
Install the Labview 7.0 software
and drivers onto your computer. These files can be found by mapping a network
drive to \\poohbah\labview, and by running the ‘autorun’ file in the ‘Labview 7’
folder. (If you're outside of the Chemistry biilding, or using wireless inside
the Chemistry building, you need to be running the Chemistry VPN when doing
this. Also, if your computer OS is Windows Vista or Windows 7, run the
installer by right-clicking on the ‘autorun’ file and
choose "Run as Adminsitrator".) The serial number for the program is
in a Word document in this folder. When asked for the location of the Labview drivers during the installation, direct the install
program to the ‘Labview 7 Drivers’ folder.
2. Copy the files LVBASICS.LLB and CEM834.llb to
the Program Files/National Instruments/Labview
7.0/user.lib folder on your computer hard drive. These files can be also found
at \\poohbah\labview.
3. Change the name of the CEM834.llb file to Yourname.llb.
(Highlight the file and then click on the name. You can then type in a new name.) IT
IS VERY IMPORTANT to have the .llb extension.
4. Remove the “Read-only” restriction on Yourname.llb.
(Highlight the file again and select Properties from the File menu. Deselect Read-only.)
5. Right click on this link to save a .pdf copy of the Labview Exercise
6. Start Labview by
clicking the LabVIEW icon in the Program Files/National
Instruments/Labview 7.0 folder.
NOTE:
All of the VI’s that you will use
and create in this lesson will be within your “library” file: Yourname.llb. You
will give a copy of your library file to me (Gavin Reid) for grading.
This exercise is worth 30% of your overall grade for this module.
The due date is November 5th,
2010 (email or hand in a copy of your library file on CD before the exam). Unless you have extensive prior experience
with Labview, you will need to start well before this
date, and you should plan to devote a significant period of time to work on the
exercises outside of the regularly scheduled class in order to complete the
exercises by the due date. A regularly scheduled class time has been set aside
for October 8th and October 11th for you to work on these
exercises (the class will not meet on Oct. 11th).
You are allowed to consult with other
students in the class, or with students who have taken the class in previous
semesters, in order to learn how to use the Labview program,
or to help with troubleshooting the various exercises.
However, ALL OF THE WORK THAT IS TO BE
SUBMITTED FOR GRADING MUST BE YOUR OWN. Please see the statement on the main
CEM 834 web page regarding academic honesty for guidelines regarding what is,
and what is not, acceptable.
Links to some potentially useful online Labview tutorials are listed below. Note that some of these
tutorials are for earlier or later versions of the software, so some of the
functions may be slightly different.
