Homework, Test, and Final Exam Rules

The quizzes, tests, and final examination will be conducted as closed-book examinations. A calculator can be employed for calculations, but information stored in advance on the calculator cannot be retrieved for use during the examination. Portable music players, such as iPods, and cellular telephones must be turned off during the examination. Please consult the Academic Honesty section, below, for additional regulations.

Homework:  We will use the on-line Mastering Chemistry software.  You will have to purchase this at the website. We will go over signing up in class. You can access the instructions for registering Mastering Chemistry Registration Instructions.

You will need the class code:  geiger95705

Exams: Students are required to take tests during the scheduled exam period. All exams will be given in CEM 138, the lecture hall. Should an absence be anticipated, the student is expected to inform Professor Geiger in writing in advance. If the absence is not reported and/or not approved, the student will receive a zero score for the missed test. Absences will be approved for religious holidays and University-sponsored activities such as a road trip for a sports team. Notice of illness on a test day should be substantiated, after the fact if necessary, by a note from a doctor. Absences will not be approved for discretionary travel or other personal scheduling conflicts.

If an absence is approved for one of the three tests, the student will be allowed to substitute the final exam score on a percentage basis for the test grade. No make-up tests will be provided. If in doubt, consult Professor Geiger about the anticipated absence well in advance of the test day.

Final Exam: The final examination will be conducted as a closed-book exercise with comprehensive coverage of the course material. Aspects of the material covered by the three tests will be combined with a treatment of the new material covered after the third test. Students are reminded of the Final Examination Policy outlined under General Information, Policies, Procedures and Regulations in Academic Programs 200:

A student absent from a final examination without a satisfactory explanation will receive a grade of 0.0 on the numerical system.... Students unable to take a final examination because of illness or other reason over which they have no control should notify the associate deans of their colleges immediately.

Academic Honesty

The Department of Chemistry adheres to the policies on academic honesty outlined by General Student Regulations, 1.00 Protection of Scholarship and Grades and the all-University Policy on Integrity of Scholarship and Grades. Statements of these policies are found in the Academic integrity link and in General Information, Policies, Procedures and Regulations in Academic Programs. Students who cheat by copying the work of others or by using unauthorized materials when completing homework assignments, preparing laboratory reports, or taking quizzes, tests, or examinations will receive a score of 0 on the assignment. Students are reminded that copying material verbatim from books and web sites or simply paraphrasing the content of books and web sites in preparing written laboratory reports without proper attribution constitutes plagiarism.
