Chemical Genealogy Work Area - J

This page is a work area in which information about every person in the MSU Chemical Genealogy charts is gathered and evaluated. The references to several chemical genealogy sources, including those available on the WWW in addition to reference books, are listed on the previous page.

The last line for each individual, in bold font and labeled "display:", shows the text to be displayed on the MSU Chemistry genealogy web pages for the individual.

This page will always be a work in progress. Please let us know of any errors, or additional opinions or evidence, by e-mailing us at: .

   [Jones]
 - DisAbs shows: Nones, Arthur Daniel, III|PhD|1984|Pennsylvania State U|
Chemistry, Organic|The Chemical Structures of Coals as Determined by Selective Oxidative Degradations|
 - MSU Chemistry brochure includes for Jones: b. 1955
 - Penn State's web page for Chemistry (http://www.psu.edu/bulletins/bluebook/faculty/chem.htm)
     lists (as of 2001):
ROBERT D. MINARD, B.A., Ph.D., Senior Lecturer in Chemistry
NORMAN C. DENO, B.S., M.S., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Chemistry
 - SciFinder shows 12 publications 1979-1986 with "coal" in the title; every one
of these is co-authored by Norman Custer Deno (who received his PhD in 1949
from the U of Michigan) and Deno is the first-named author on 11 papers.
Others who co-authored more than 6 papers are: Walter Gregory Rakitsky (9) (PhD 1979
from Penn State) and Robert David Minard (8) (PhD 1969 from U Wisconsin).
As Rakitsky is nearly a contemporary of Jones, it is rather unlikely that
he is Jones' preceptor. Compared to Minard, Deno's consistent first-author
status suggests that he is in charge and thereby the most likely to be
     Jones' preceptor.

1998, includes: "He started his graduate work at the University of
Minnesota, where he received the DuPont Fellowship and studied with
professor Lauder W. Jones. In 1920, Mr. Hurd moved with Jones to
Princeton University and completed his doctorate there. ..."
-SciFinder shows one article in which "Lauder Wm Jones" is the subject:
"Major, Randolph T. Lauder Wm. Jones. Industrial and Engineering
    Chemistry, News Edition (1934), 12 363."
 - U Minnesota chemistry history web page at the URL:
     http://www.chem.umn.edu/alumni/HistoryWeb/History.html
includes: "Lauder W. Jones, Professor of Chemistry at the University of
    Minnesota from 1918 to 1920."
 - YorkU shows: Lauder W. Jones (Chicago, 1897) under Nef.
 - e-mailed (19 Feb 2004) to Douglas Ho at Princeton, asking for Jones' birth
and death years. Doug replied immediately that the birth year was 1869
and that he would continue looking for more information.
 - e-mail (23 Feb 2004) from Douglas Ho at Princeton:
"11:30 AM --- I've just returned from our University Archives. That
was an interesting excursion ... mission accomplished!
Lauder William Jones was born on July 22, 1869 in New Richmond,
Ohio to Montagu John Jones (father) and Mary Kilbreth Lauder (mother),
and married Emma Louisa McCune on June 27, 1904.
He served on the Princeton faculty from 1920-1937, and was the first
incumbent of the A. Barton Hepburn Professorship of Organic Chemistry
(one of the Chaired Professorships here at Princeton).
He died on December 28, 1960 ... probably in Los Angeles where he
    retired to in 1937."
 - California Death Index (at RootsWeb.com) agrees with Princeton regarding
birth date, birth state, death date, and states that his death place was
    Los Angeles.
