THE GREEK INTERPRETERS

On Wednesday, October 26th, nineteen members of the Greek interpreters and one guest, Helen Bray from Kalamazoo, met at Hershey's Steak and Seafood restaurant in East Lansing for our Fall meeting. As a suitable followup to the previous examination of "The Final Problem", the story selected for the evening discussion was "The Empty House". The meeting opened with the customary Canonical Toasts to Mrs. Hudson by (The Hound), Mycroft Holmes (by Mr. Patrick), the Second Mrs. Watson (by Hilton Soames) and The Woman (by J. M. Sweeney). Message Boy followed with his traditional toast to Conan Doyle. A quiz concerning events in this story tested the members' recall of details. This quiz and many earlier quizzes may be viewed here.

The discussion that followed ranged over many subjects. Our visitor, a member of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, recounted the June 15-25th pilgrimage made by sixty members to Switzerland, to commemorate the centenary of Holmes' retirement to take up beekeeping in Sussex. A full description of this event may be found on the London Society's web-site (link below).
The similarity between a recent $67.8 million bank robbery in Brazil and the foiled robbery in "The Red-Headed League" was reviewed by John Larson. Finally, discussion of "The Empty House" focussed chiefly on the uncertain trajectory of the air-gun bullet, especially after breaking the window glass at 221B.

Following the quiz, the meeting concluded, as usual, by reading Vincent Starrett's "221B" poem, and the singing of The Anthem.
