Mesh Plot of the Density Difference of the Pi System at 2.32 Bohr

The above represents the density difference of the pi bond system in molecular oxygen. Recall that green represents zero difference between the interacting and non-interacting systems of molecular oxygen. Notice that there is a green no de down the center of the system. This plot shows that the pi bond is formed by the movement of electrons from the outer regions of the molecule to the space between the nuclei. This is expected since the "lone pair" region is not formed by the pi electro ns.
