MTR Resources		This page lists pertinent information regarding our NMR spectrometers including location, capabilities, and instrument status. The Facility currently has eleven Varian instruments located throughout the Chemistry Building. All instruments are available for use by the faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students. Spectrometer time is reserved online for most instruments and is available in several formats (e.g. long or short blocks). Prior to first time use, new users must obtain training in order to obtain a NMR account. Please contact the NMR staff to schedule training. Rates for Use of the Max T. Rogers NMR Spectrometers:

• The spectrometers are available for use to members of the Michigan State University Community and, upon request, to all users.
• Users are charged for the time that they are logged-in to the spectrometer. There is no charge for remote access.
• Users are generally not charged for time that is reserved; however, users that misuse the reservation system by booking and not using significant blocks of time will be charged for all the reserved time.
• The MSU rates are as follows (please contact the Facility for outside rates):
  • Effective May 1, 2013, the rates for NMR usage of instruments within the Chemistry building will increase to $8/hr (Weekdays: 8am-6pm) and $4 (Weekends, evening, and holidays). The current rates of $6/hr and $3/hr (Weekdays and other times, respectively) have been in place for over 15 years and are not sufficient to keep pace with the rising costs of running/maintaining such a large instrument facility. The additional funds will help us continue to provide a top-notch NMR facility to all members of the MSU community.
  • Non-MSU academic rates will be increasing to $20/hr from $15/hr. Our sample service fee of $20 per sample for liquid-state work will not increase. The sample fee for solid-state work, however, will increase to $40/hr to cover the additional prep and setup time associated with solid-state work. Non-MSU industrial rates will remain at $50/hr plus applicable sample fee.
  • 900 MHz NMR Spectrometer:
    The promotional rate for the 900 MHz NMR spectrometer will be ending on May 1 as well. A new tiered fee schedule will be used for MSU users: $15/hr for the first 12 hours, then $10/hr up to 24 hours, and $7.50/hr over 24 hours. A 1-hour minimum charge will be enforced.
    Non-MSU academic users will be charged $15/hr for the first 12 hours, then $10/hr for all usage more than 12 hours. A 1-hour minimum charge will be enforced. In addition to hourly rates, a $30 per sample handling fee will be charged for staff run experiments. The fee is not charged to MSU academics.
    Industrial users will be charged $200/hr.
