The Chemical Visualization Facility was created in 1991 with the purchase of three Silicon Graphics Indigo computers. These three machines, along with an existing 3-processor Ardent Titan graphics supercomputer, were used to teach a new course entitled "Computational Chemistry: A Hands-On Primer."
Three more SGI Indigos were purchased in 1993 to meet the increasing demands of the course, and in 1994 the facility was expanded again with a grant from the National Science Foundation. The NSF grant provided funds to purchase a four-processor SGI Onyx, two SGI Indigo2s, videotape recording and editing gear, high-speed optical fiber networking equipment, and a variety of software. In the summer of 1996, three more SGI Indigo2s were added to the facility.
The Chemical Visualization Facility is now being used by several courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, as well as for numerous research projects and outreach efforts.
